There many renewable energy sources around us. Whenever renewable energy is mentioned, what springs into our minds is solar and wind power. For some time, these two sources of clean energy have been the main focus whenever renewable energy is discussed. When bio-gas production and geothermal energy is thrown into the mix, the four receive a huge chunk of attention as far as renewable energy is concerned. However, the present world has many more sources that can be potentially utilized for renewable energy and it is therefore important to have an approach of using several technologies at the same time if we are to solve our energy problems.

The main reason that the aforementioned four renewable energy sources have been on the receiving end of a lot of attention both from the government and the media is that they were all at one point thought to be the ultimate solution for the present energy problem. They four were widely touted as the solution that our spiraling demand for energy and dependence on imports just needed. However, it is now apparent that the kind of cure all solution that was widely expected cannot be provided by any of these four technologies. It is therefore time for other potential sources of energy to be explored.

Whenever something is in motion, there is energy being used and this energy can be harnessed. The main idea behind renewable energy sources is to find such wasteful motions that are occurring naturally and harness it for energy production… This is exactly how wind generators work, they harness the power of moving wind to turn turbines and generate power. This idea can be used anywhere that motion occurs naturally. An example that has been successfully deployed although room for improvement still exists is the use of turbines in rivers.

Of course dams have been a source of hydropower for a long time, but the environment is greatly harmed by the construction of reservoirs and the flooding of land. Future river turbines should be designed to harness the water’s natural flow to turn the turbines. They should look like wind turbines, with blades extending into current of the river. The turbines should be fixed to the bottom of the river at the deepest section to minimize any effects on the surrounding areas. However, such turbines have to be extremely durable to minimize maintenance frequency and this is the major reason behind the limited success observed so far. However, the technology can be developed even further and this could make it renewable energy source that can be relied on.

The ocean is another source of motion that occurs naturally. There is constant motion in the ocean, from tidal changes to wave action; there is a lot of potential energy going to waste. Different technologies have been used in an attempt to capture the power form this motion in oceans, but they are yet to receive enough attention. The major stumbling block here is the ocean environment’s harshness, which results in corrosion of metal together with other hazards. Again this is another renewable energy source with a huge potential, which is yet to be fully explored.
